Valkyrie 061378 by cbomb13 Valkyrie 061378 by cbomb13
Well, after about 20 hours of actual work over three days, I'm finally done with Valkyrie number 061378, the first of three for my burgeoning Imperial Guard army.

This is a plastic model from the Warhammer 40K game.

This ship is a prison transport. It's job is to deploy penal legion squads into battle. The entire army will revolve around a penal colony who's charge is the rehabiltation of hardened criminals. The green inmates are put through a rigorous re-indoctrination program, and flogged daily. After three months of this, they are condemned to front line duty. This entails being dropped off in combat on the front lines by means of grav-chute insertion. If they survive this, and make it back into Imperial hands they earn the right to become a uniformed prison soldier.....well you get the idea :)

Long story short, stay tuned for a bunch of crazed orange pajama wearing inmates to accompany this ship in games. That's the next squad I'm working on.

*EDIT Here are some shots of the inside, close-up.

NOSE ART FTW! Great work, nice colors.
One nit pick. There should be no apostrophe in "MASTERS."

hmmm... didn't know that penal legion troopers were deployed with grav chutes...

ya learn something new every day

I really do like the camo scheme, yet the first impression I got (before seeing the lock) was that it looked similar to what you'd expect on inquisitorial vehicles

They don't get grave chutes. They get shoved out at 15 feet, and about forty mph. If they survive, great. If not they were sentenced to die anyway ;)

In games I have yet to deploy them in this way anyhow. They serve to make the ship itself a scoring unit for cheap points.

Thanks for the +fav :D

Geez, that feels really grungy. Like a bunch of IG really did just attack it with some paint and take off into battle.

I mean this in a good way, I'm not sure if it sounds like that to you, but I do.

Thanks :D I wanted this to look really beat on, and sort of neglected (especially the interior.) It doesn't need to be too reliable, it's full of scumbags after all ;)

What in the name of frozen trout! is that an imperial-aligned model that I just favourited? I think it must be the first!

Seriously... I don't get why anyone's said they dislike the scheme or the fluff, I think this is a fantastic idea - It's great to see something imperial that isn't tremendously rank and file (like everything else!).

First off - Did you use an airbrush on this? Whether you did or not, the result's truly given the Valkyrie a ''dystopic'' feel. It's dark, it's weathered and it's damn' good!

Secondly, the freehand - This is one of the best I've seen so far. You see lots and lots of freehand in space marine chapters and such, but it's always something that lacks individual character (like a man with a hammer or a man with wings or something along those lines) - I think that your freehand of the girl gives this ship a truly ''lived-in'' feel, as if it's being used by real grunts, not rank-and-file-robots like most IG.

I'm truly impressed with this, I'd say it's the best vehichle on DA so far. Normally I don't like ass-kissing, but you've earned it...

Yay imperial pin ups! I found the "masters of rapid insertion" and the smiling guardswomen particularly humorous.

So, do you treat this unit like Conscripts or ELITE Jump Troops? Does their jump training consist of being handed a ratty old grav chute 5 minutes before deployment and being told "Pull this and aim for the ground"? Love the whole genre of this army. Well thought out and planned. You sound like me with needing to have a well developed background story and researched history for a model or army before being able to contemplate painting it.

Elite suicide jump troops. No grav chutes, just low level passes with a hardy shove :D

Actually I'm considering moding up some grav chutes for them, but I want to play them a few times before I bother. If I never use that deployment I don't want to model them that way.

Well the way I read the rules you do not need chutes to deploy from the Valkyrie anyway. I like the 'boot to the ass' method of deployment. You need to get some Arbites models or dress up some as Arbites for your Commissars and Commanders.

I do have some Arbites on the way, but the overseers and prison guard (veterans) are going to be steel legion models.

That's cool. I think the Steel Legion models are a good fit as would be the Kasrkin Storm Troopers as a riot squad. Always liked the Steel Legion and Death Korps or Krieg miniatures.

Yeah, Death Corps rule. I had an online cart chock full of 'em (especially those rough rider minis) until I realized I could get a titan cheaper! Needless to say I bought the steel legion instead.

I've been wanting to build a Valkyrie... just not willing to shell out $50 - $60 for one yet. I may get one from a friend in exchange for doing a commission piece for him.

Awesomness! I'm almost a bit envy, I still havn't painted my own valkyrie... cuz I don't know how I should paint it... and I don't have a painted IG army to act as inspiration... anyway great work on the painting, looks awesome!
